Watts Towers

Watts Towers

In 1921 Simon Rodia, an immigrant from Italy, began work on a series of cone-shaped structures in his yard using only found objects. Over 33 years he employed cement and steel for reinforcement while adding glass and tile from Malibu Pottery and approximately 25,000 seashells as embellishments.

The resulting hand-built 17 towers, the tallest of which reaches 99 feet, are a stunning example of American folk art and a National Historic Landmark
